The nominated projects for the young designer competition of spoga+gafa, unique youngstar, have been announced. Martin Königer is a member of the jury and owner of Pavilla Extérieur, a brand shop for garden furniture in the premium segment. We spoke to the expert about this year’s nominations and current trends in outdoor design.

Mr Königer, you are a jury member of this year’s edition of the young designer competition, unique youngstar. How do you rate the standing of the competition in the industry?

As already in the past years, I very much look forward to the aspiring talents of our industry. Since there is no comparable competition, unique youngstar is a fixed date in my schedule.

In total, 15 drafts by young designers were nominated for the unique youngstar 2017 award. Which trends have you observed in regards to this year’s entries?

I am observing the fact that the young designers are occupying themselves intensely with the accessories section. I have particularly followed the ideas concerning the theme light with great interest, since for me as a dealer they are becoming increasingly more important.

You sell the garden furniture of premium manufacturers in your brand shop Pavilla Extérieur. Which current trends and developments are you observing in outdoor design?

As in the past years, we are noticing a decline in the classic wicker furniture. There is a strong shift towards the customers’ demand for the materials aluminium and stainless steel, often combined with textiles or novel weatherproof woven materials. In terms of cooking in the open air, we are noticing a trend towards complex outdoor kitchens.

I hope that many national and international companies are represented at spoga+gafa again, since the trade fair offers the industry the ideal platform.
