grow – Inspiring international artists

The international trade fair for the garden industry is also exploring new ideas when it comes to its advertising campaigns.

In collaboration with the Egger Grey agency in Berlin, spoga+gafa will be presenting five international artists who have gained inspiration from the event’s central theme “grow” and have interpreted it in their own special way through their illustrations.

Acci Baba
From a very young age, the Japan native has worked on refining his skills in traditional calligraphy. His mother, who is also his biggest mentor, introduced him to this historic art form. Acci spent some time in San Francisco before he found success with his artwork in Tokyo. He currently lives with his family in Berlin.

Apo Fousek
Apo is an extraordinarily talented artist, skater and surfer. When he’s not working, you will find him riding the waves in Brazil or California. The environmental activist is a celebrated artist of the Brazilian underground.

Matthias Gephart
Dada, pop and subculture? Based in his adopted hometown of Berlin, Matthias combines various styles with a graffiti background from his time in Germany’s Ruhr region. His illustrations have been recognised with the “Red Dot Design Award” and the “Art Directors Club Award”, already appearing in multiple international media publications.

Neil Duerden
The illustrator and designer is regarded as an expert on the theme of “mixed media”. He has a superb command of pixels and vectors in equal measure. Based in Manchester, Neil lets his imagination run free when creating pieces of work for international clients.

Stephanie Wiehle
This artist from Berlin always had a soft spot for pen and paper. It thus came as no surprise that she channelled this talent into becoming an illustrator. Whether with pen, fineliner, graphite or paintbrush, Stephanie loves to draw by hand. She has a particular interest in typography, where her fondness for a detailed, playful style can be further explored.

Towers of Trees – Vertical Forests in the Sky

The Vertical Forest project aims to build high-density tower blocks with trees within the city.

The first example of a Bosco Verticale/Vertical Forest is currently under construction in the Garibaldi Repubblica area in Milan, with two towers which are 80 metres and 112 metres tall respectively, and which will be able to hold 480 big and medium size trees, 250 small size trees, 11.000 groundcover plants and 5.000 shrubs (the equivalent of a hectare of forest). The Vertical Forest has at its heart an concept of architecture which demineralises urban areas and uses the changing shape and form of leaves for its facades, and thus which hands over to vegetation itself the task of absorbing the dust in the air, and of creating an adequate micro-climate in order to filter out the sunlight. This is a kind of biological architecture which refuses to adopt a strictly technological and mechanical approach to environmental sustainability.

Vertical Forest increases biodiversity. It helps to set up an urban ecosystem where different kinds of vegetation create a vertical environment which can also be colonised by birds and insects, and thus becomes both a magnet for and a symbol of the spontaneous recolonisation of the city by vegetation and by animal life. The creation of a number of vertical forests in the city will be able to create a network of environmental corridors which will give life to the main parks in the city, bringing the green space of avenues and gardens and connecting various spaces of spontaneous vegetation growth.

Trees are a key element in understanding architectural projects and garden systems. In this case the choice of the types of trees was made to fit with their positioning on the facades and in terms of their height, and took two years to conclude alongside a group of botanists. The plants used in this project will be grown specifically for this purpose and will be pre-cultivated. Over this period these plants slowly got used to the conditions they will be placed in on the building.

Cultural highlights of Cologne during spoga+gafa

From 2nd to 4th September the garden fair spoga+gafa in Cologne is presenting trends, new products and innovations from the green sector. But besides all this the City of Cologne is also attracting visitors with a colourfully-structured leisure and culture programme. Here are several tips for going out to suit every taste.

Circus artists at the Cirque Bouffon

On 2nd September the Cirque Bouffon is presenting its new “Solvo” programme at the Schokoladenmuseum. According to the philosophy of the “Nouveau Cirque”, an overall work of art consisting of imaginative costumes, circus artists, theatrical elements, music and dance is being presented. In this connection the organizer is promising that the artists ensemble and music especially composed for the event will take the audience to a kaleidoscope of colours, shapes and sounds.

From the Bible through to Eau de Cologne up to pop art

Up to the end of September 2012, the Noah’s Ark, Europe’s first swimming Bible theme park, will also be moored in the Rheinauhafen next to the Schokoladenmuseum. On four floors, the 70-metre long wooden reconstruction of the biblical ship is presenting a partially interactively structured exhibition from the Old and New Testaments. On  2nd September the “Farina” Fragrance Museum is inviting you to a historic guided costume tour: an actor will be introducing visitors to the secrets and history of the world-famous Eau de Cologne, enriched by anecdotes from the Rococo period. In connection with spoga+gafa, the Wallraf-Richartz Museum, with works from Stefan Lochner through to Rembrandt up to Renoir and van Gogh, is showing a retrospective of the so-called “Sonderbundausstellung”. The Museum Ludwig, famous for its outstanding Picasso and Pop Art presentation, is also showing an exhibition on Claes Oldenburg, one of the great names in American Pop Art.

Lady Gaga and Coldplay at the close of the fair

On  4th September no less than two pop concerts of superlative class will be on the agenda: with her “The Born This Way Ball” tour, Lady Gaga will be rocking the LANXESS arena not far from the exhibition halls. On the same evening British band Coldplay will be performing at the RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne.
