Nominated for unique youngstar 2014: Kaware by Tsuyoshi Hayashi

16 projects from 15 young design teams are nominated this year for the unique youngstar 2014 design award. The topic of this year’s contest is “outdoor living”.

All nominated design prototypes will be exhibited at the international garden trade fair spoga+gafa 2014 in Cologne, Germany from August 31st to September 2nd.

Kawara is the Japanese name for roof tiles. Many of these tiles are discarded in the process of house building because they got split in half or have some cracks. But they still have their unique textures and colours and are very durable, ideal for many uses. In Japan over five per cent of all used kawara are thrown into landslides, that’s about 65.000 pieces. The designer Tsuyoshi Hayashi from Eindhoven, Netherlands was shocked by the waste and started recycling them. Just by cutting off the damaged parts and fixing them to wooden structures the “useless waste” is transformed to “useful matter”. The results are stylish stools that are unique and because of their weather resistance perfect for outdoors.

Materials: Ceramic roof top tiles and a wooden frame
73 x 73 x 50 cm (Hi-Stool), 52 x 164 x 43 cm (Bench)

The three jury winners and the winner of the public votes will be announced in the garden unique hall (10.2) on August 31st at 5 p.m. during the unique hour.

Vote here for your favorite design and decide who will be the winner of the audience award!
