Far ahead of its time: World Horticultural Fair Floriade 2022

The seventh Floriade is being held under the motto “Growing Green Cities” with a clear focus on urban and regional development. The action will be taking place in the young municipality Almere in the province of Flevoland. The World Horticultural Fair takes place in the Netherlands every ten years.

Floriade 2022 will combine two things: On the one hand, the innovative drive of the Dutch horticultural sector and secondly the desire of the municipality Almere to become a green, liveable city. The exhibition space lies opposite the city centre on the other side of the Weerwater Lake. Here, the riverside plot is to be developed as a vibrant, urban neighbourhood and a huge library of plants is to be created. Floriade itself will be created as a “grid of gardens” on a 45 hectare, square-shaped peninsula – each block will be hereby dedicated to certain plants. The horticultural exhibition will be addressing questions on worldwide urbanisation, food production, climate change and energy generation. It is to have a “Living Lab” – an experimental garden for the research of innovative systems in the fields residual current, water purity, mobility and the production of food.

Almere is a city that was built by pioneers: curious and powerful people with different professional backgrounds, who were always looking for new creative solutions of how to make life more pleasant and better. Its inhabitants are still building and designing today – the city is nowhere near finished… For such a major international event like Floriade 2022, such a place is ideal to present innovative and green architecture and celebrate healthy life.

And when Floriade closes its doors again after six months, many of the garden areas in the city are to remain intact. The current plan not only foresees a temporary exhibition, but instead a permanent, green “cité idéale”. With the expansion of the city, Weerwater is to become a central lake in Almere and the surface of the Floriade a residential area with an ultra-modern, green infrastructure.
