Plant yourself a chair!

The increase of urban farming, whereby green spaces are opening up into shared gardens for new agricultural experiments, was the main starting point for Werner Aisslinger´s latest work.

The Berlin and Singapore based designer and architect believes that giving everyone the possibility of becoming a producer of agricultural products will be the future in regard to quality and sustainability. With this, he thought to invert the creation and development of furniture from globalized serial manufacturing to local production conserving resources. That is how ‘chair farm’ was conceived. It is Aisslinger´s vision of how this idea could be realized within an agricultural lab. The project itself is a kit which offers the ability to plant and naturally grow chairs. This initial prototype consists of a perforated steel corset which serves as a mould to give the vegetation support.

The ‘chair farm’ greenhouse and laboratory was shown at ventura lambrate as part of the ‘instant stories’ exhibition during milan design week 2012.

Garden unique design contest:
Several new and prominent jury members

This year will see an even better class of garden unique, the exclusive format for premium brands in the garden furniture segment at spoga+gafa. Almost all of the top exhibitors from last year’s premiere in Cologne will be in attendance between the 2nd and 4th of September. Not only that, but other well-known companies such as Manutti, Viteo, Barlow Tyrie, and Solpuri have also confirmed that they will be appearing at garden unique, making this part of the trade fair even more attractive to top national and international retailers.

As well as these premium names, garden unique is again opening up a forum for young designers and their creative ideas. This year there will be a design competition with the tagline “Dining outdoors”. The objective is to design furniture and objects that create the perfect open-air culinary experience. Be it furniture that is easy to transport or a high-end parasol for a picnic, fixtures for outside a street café, or even outdoor cooking, seating, or shade for professional gastronomy serving large-scale events in an exclusive hotel or restaurant environment. This year’s competition will be a boost to its reputation thanks to the addition of several new and prominent jury members: garden unique is pleased to welcome distinguished French designer and architect Patrick Nadeau, celebrated designer Marc Sadler from Milan, and Marcus Fairs, editor-in-chief of the international architecture and design online magazine “Dezeen”. They will be joined by outdoor gastronomy expert, Herbert Seckler, owner of the scene restaurant “Sansibar” located in the middle of the Sylt dunes. Also on the jury this year are Tobias Lutz, co-founder and managing director of architonic.com, and Ralf Ferdinand Broekman, publisher and editor-in-chief at German architecture magazine “build”.

This star-studded judging panel will select the winner of the design competition. At the same time, the creative community will rate the young designers’ ideas on the platform jovoto.com. The winners will have their designs transformed into 3D prototypes to be presented in the garden unique area at spoga+gafa. Other ideas selected by both the jury members and the community will be shown in a special exhibition. Prize-giving will take place during “unique hour” on the Monday, followed by a get-together to talk about the burning issues of the day in a more relaxed atmosphere.

The Winner takes it all

SKYbed has won the Interior Innovation Award 2011, the reddot design award für Produkt Design 2011 and is nominated for the Designpreis Deutschland.

The SKYbed is a relax piece of outdoor furniture that resembles characteristics of a bed and a hammock. It unifies the comfort of a bed with the enjoyable rocking of a hammock. It consists of a fully dismountable stainless steel frame and a 100% weatherproof relax mat. The stainless steel frame flexibly adapts to any uneven floor surfaces without creating tension and therefore damage to the frame. All four suspension bars are individually adjustable in length for individual relax properties. They also allow to level out the relax mat when two persons with different body weights enjoy a rest in the SKYbed.

The intelligent material composition solves the typical dilemma in outdoor furniture. All products of SKYLIVING are made out of highly technical textiles which breathe and are weatherproof. SKYLIVING works with textiles that are not coated and therefore watertight but chose exactly the opposite way. All textiles have an open-cell structure so that water and vapor can easily penetrate the material without being absorbed. Therefore all products can be exposed to the elements all year long.

Interior Innovation Award 2012: Summer on the move – Don’t forget to bring your table

As the sun moves in the sky, we often move with it. That is why the Danish design duo Strand + Hvass has designed a table for Cane-line, which is easy to move from place to place. The tray table “On-the-move” is sturdy, easy to lift and strong enough for outdoor life. It is made of 100 percent aluminium and the powder coating ensures that it can handle all sorts of weather.

A hole in the middle leads rainwater away. The handle makes the table easy to move and the tray can be lifted off for cleaning or use in other places. “On-the-move” is the perfect supplement to other furniture, indoors as well as outdoors. It stands for Danish design tradition where function is just as important as appearance. Good reasons for getting the prestigious Interior Innovation Award 2012. This award appraises to innovations in all product areas of the furnishing sector world-wide and is organized by is the German Design Council.
