Biovessel: An Ecosystem Powered by Food Waste

Biovessel is an easy-to-use home composter that deals with raw food scraps by turning it into nutrients that feed new life. With the help of earthworms, soil and its microorganisms and water, the ecosystem within Biovessel redefines waste, which is otherwise disposed in bins. The process of breaking down the organic waste is purely powered by nature and creates a self-sustainable ecosystem that achieves odourless, high-efficiency decomposition. Depending on the type of food waste, the Biovessel ecosystem is able to break down up to 500g-1kg per week.

The idea for this product has been launched by the Taiwan-based biolab Bionicraft. “Our aim was to raise awareness of the issue of food waste and its disposal process,” says Brooklyn Chao, Founder of Bionicraft.  “We tried to come up with a solution that can be managed in urban homes creating a self-sustainable ecosystem that reverses the vicious food waste cycle.” According to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, roughly one-third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year gets lost or wasted and ends up rotting in landfills, needlessly producing greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to global warming and climate change.

The patented form of Biovessel has been created with the quantitative data acquired and translated from more than 20 months of biological research, through observation and experiments, on the process of food waste decomposition. Being defined by nature, rather than being deliberately designed for aesthetic appeal, Biovessel is most suitable for its inhabitants and is most efficient and convenient for its users.

Biovessel can be funded via Kickstarter until the end of October. Worldwide shipping is scheduled for February 2017.
