The barbecue market in Germany is indeed showing further growth, however the industry is in the meantime miles away from the two-digit increase it was able to achieve in past years. This is shown by the “Industry focus on barbecuing” recently published by the Institute für Handelsforschung GmbH (IFH Köln/Institute for trade research) that was compiled in collaboration with the Industry Garden Association (IVG) e.V.

The market for barbecues, barbecue accessories and barbecue fuels brought the past year to a close with a moderate growth of 1.7 percent. This corresponds to a market volume of for the first time over Euro 1.2 billion. The actual barbecue devices accounted for almost two thirds of the turnover. The remaining third was divided up almost equally among fuels and barbecue accessories.

“The barbecue market has grown up and we are observing a market saturation,” commented Christian Lerch, consultant at IFH Cologne. “Even if the trend is moving towards a second device, many households with barbecues are well-equipped in the meantime. The accessory and replacements business is thus becoming correspondingly more important. Here there are many new trends and the consumers are offered numerous product innovations.”

Indeed over the past years barbecue accessories have developed above the market average. On the one hand, this is due to the market saturation for barbecues and on the other hand the Germans are preparing more and more sophisticated and diversified dishes on their barbecues. Thus, the demand for accessories is correspondingly high: Supplementary to the barbecue the consumers can for example currently buy pizza stones, wok attachments, meat thermometers or vegetable baskets.
