Colourful start to the spring: The 2019 tulip season begins in Amsterdam on 19 January

Even if the first tulip species are already available in the retail outlets in December and more and more people are discovering bulb flowers as decorative items for the Christmas period, the official start to the season for the early blossoming plants is not until January. To be more precise: On the third Saturday of the month, because that is when National Tulip Day is celebrated in the Netherlands.

The centrally located Dam Square in Amsterdam is transformed into a huge sea of flowers on this day. The organisation Tulip Promotion Netherlands (TPN), which over 500 Dutch tulip horticulturists belong to, organises the campaign. To the joy of the inhabitants of the city and the tourists they arrange the colourful splendour at the foot of the Royal Palace every year. 200,000 early blossoming flowers are grown earlier in greenhouses extra for the event. A viewing platform specially erected for the purpose offers a wonderful view of the huge, temporary garden of flowers in the centre of the city. From 1:00 p.m. onwards the gates of the garden are then opened and each of the visitors is allowed to choose 20 tulips free of charge.

In 2019, National Tulip Day falls on 19 January and is being staged under the motto “Flower Power”. The selection promises to be particularly varied and bright this time. This task is easy to master with tulips, because hardly any other plant boasts so many different petal colours and shapes – from lily-like to fringed, from simple to filled, from bright yellow to dark violet or even multi-coloured…
