With the Komodo sofa and the Trill chair, Italian manufacturer Nardi presented two extraordinary new outdoor furniture collections at the last spoga+gafa. We talked to designer Raffaello Galiotto about the concept behind the designs, current design trends and the benefits of fiberglass.

Mr. Galiotto, which basic developments are you observing with regards to the design of outdoor areas?

I think that outdoor furnishings will develop towards a raised level of quality, in terms of design, to make products that meet the needs of consumers with elegance and innovative solutions that enhance outdoor spaces. People will increasingly tend to look for spaces in contact with nature, which in our cities and modern homes is more and more scarcely accessible.

Which concept stands behind the design of the new outdoor sofa Komodo from Nardi?

Komodo is not just a sofa, but rather a system, that is to say a set of interconnected components that interact with one another. The natural inspiration drawn from the branches of a tree, which distinguishes the seat, backrest and armrest, guided me towards a formal solution with an apparently random, irregular woven pattern that in actual fact corresponds to a specific geometrical and numerical logic, derived from the need for symmetry that allows the components to be attached to all sides of the seat. Komodo, through the combination of its components, can be built by the customer like a toy made up of pieces of Lego to suit personal requirements and, after use, it can be taken apart and put back together to form different solutions.

Your new Trill collection from Nardi is made of fiberglass, but inspired by the formal language of materials such as metal. Which qualities do you especially appreciate for outdoor design?

I particularly love natural materials, but as we all know, the outdoor environment, characterised by sunlight, rain and frost, requires extremely hard-wearing materials.

Fiberglass resin offers outstanding characteristics, including resistance to weathering, making it ideal for outdoor use, and I am also fascinated by the pliability of this material, which can take on any shape the designer wishes. I have been working with Nardi for 25 years, and the brand has made this material its key element, in which it has always made huge investments in terms of technology and innovation, allowing the product to evolve significantly over time. In the Trill project, I tried to interpret the formal language of wood and metal, tying them together in an impossible combination which in actual fact is achievable using fiberglass resin.

What do you expect for the future of outdoor design?

The majority of outdoor furnishings is anonymous and static, I expect greater attention to design and innovation. I hope that manufacturers understand that the market not only needs products, but it is thirsty for new solutions, capable of interpreting the new needs and trends of an increasingly rapidly changing world.
